We conducted 22 research surveys and placed 355 observers on commercial fishing vessels and in 12 processing plants. Our science provides the basis for sustainable fisheries management, protecting and recovering marine mammal populations, and maintaining productive marine ecosystems in Alaska. We also share our expertise with our NOAA colleagues on the West Coast to collect a variety of information to study some species that migrate and spend part of the year in waters from Washington to California. We gather information for the protection and recovery of whales, porpoises, seals, and sea lions that use Alaska waters as a summer feeding ground or year-round habitat. This is especially important as we experience novel climate conditions due to climate change and extreme events, such as marine heatwaves. Having data collected and analyzed over many years provides an understanding of species relationships and how Alaska ecosystems functioned in the past. We also study the places where species breed, feed and rear their young. We also collect and analyze a variety of information on marine food webs-who eats what and how ocean conditions, like temperature, currents, and pH, affect growth and survival of plankton, fish and crabs. To help predict future population abundance and trends, we study young fish and crabs as they develop and survive from eggs to adults. Specifically, our job is to monitor the abundance and trends (whether populations are increasing or declining) of federally managed harvestable seafood caught by commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries. We also collect a variety of information on Alaska human communities that look to the ocean for their food, livelihoods, recreation, cultural enrichment, and spiritual well being. We study marine life and marine ecosystems from the seafloor to the ocean surface. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center is composed of six divisions overseen by the Science Director’s Office, which lead and carry out mission-essential research, operations, and administrative activities.

Sherman tanks carrying infantry wait for the order to advance at the start of Operation 'Goodwood', 18 July 1944.Wikimedia Commons Thus, the momentum swung to the side of the Soviets, who eventually won the Battle of Kursk Operation Goodwood: July 18 – 20, 1944 The Germans were unable to take Prokhorovka, and although it was not destroyed (the original goal of the Soviets), the II SS-Panzer Corps was exhausted, and prevented from continuing their offensive. German tank losses were smaller by comparison, up to 80 tanks and assault guns destroyed. The Soviets lost around 400 tanks, more than half of their force. In the beginning of August, the Soviets began a major offensive around the Kursk salient, and within a few weeks the Germans were in retreat all along the eastern front. The fighting was some of the most intense in the history of armored warfare. After six days of warfare concentrated near Prokhorovka, south of Kursk, the German Field Marshal Gunther von Kluge called off the offensive, and by July 23 the Soviets had forced the Germans back to their original positions. However, the Soviets had better tanks and air support than in previous battles, and in bitter fighting Soviet antitank artillery destroyed as much as 40 percent of the German armor, which included their new Mark VI Tiger tanks. The German attack began on July 5, and 38 divisions, nearly half of which were armored, began moving from the south and the north. In early July, Germany and the USSR concentrated their forces near the city of Kursk in western Russia, site of a 150-mile-wide Soviet pocket that jutted 100 miles into the German lines. The Battle of Kursk, involving some 6,000 tanks, two million men, and 5,000 aircraft, ends with the German offensive repulsed by the Soviets at heavy cost.
